Kingcaster uke build : part 13 – How to finish an electric ukulele build

Hell Yeah!!!

Regular readers of this blog will know that I’m building an electric ukulele… It’s taken a long, long time. All along the way I’ve posted progress updates and shared with you the highs and the lows. Well, I’m coming to the end of my wonderful journey. This won’t be my last post on the subject, but it will probably be the last on the actual build itself. My last series of updates revolved around some frustrations I was having with the paint job and of course I’d forgotten to fit the fret markers! I bet you’re wondering how it all turned out. I kept seeing ukes all over the place….

Out and about in Forest Hill on Friday during the day and around The Tower of London in the evening, and I couldn’t stop spotting ukuleles and related instruments.

The instruments you can see in cabinets are at the Horniman Museam in Forest Hill, South-East London. More information about them and the hundresds of other instruments in their gallery can be found in their catalogued web page.

“Jakarta Punk: The Marjinal Story” – UPDATE

It’s common knowledge that Electric Ukulele Land endorses and supports punk band Marjinal and their efforts to provide a glimmer of hope for street kids in Indonesia. Their weapon of choice is the ukulele; Their passion is Punk!

A couple of months ago The Jakarta Film Team achieved funding for a project to film and promote Marjinal’s work via Kickstarter. They will produce a documentary called Jakarta Punk: The Marginal Story. Its aim is simple: to affect change by raising awareness.

The team have been providing regular progress updates and the latest announces the creation of a facebook page. If you haven’t done so already, why not pay them a visit and offer them some support! I know that they would very much appreciate it.

Awol : Got idea for direction

You never know where inspiration may come from. I posted this asking what should my first build be. I already had a few ideas of what I’l like but no idea how to make any of it happen. Then Electric Ukulele land’s own Daniel Hulbert showed me this:

My eyes lit up! Yes this is what I’m looking for, though I’m not crazy about the body style at all. So I plan to buy the components and see what I can load them into. Perhaps the flying v or something else a bit more rocking. Also have no desire to unscrew the back to change batteries so want to use  Daniel Hulbert’s battery idea from his uku bass build.

I’m in need of the list of parts that make up this build. Who can help me there?

Kingcaster uke build : part 12 – How to fit fret markers

So I’m building an electric ukulele… and I’m making all sorts of mistakes along the way.

This might have been an interesting fret marker

In my last post I revealed that I had “forgotten” to fit the fret markers – the little dots that are strategically inlayed into the fretboard. I should have done this before I hammered home the fret wire so that I could have sanded and smoothed to perfection without risk of damaging the frets. I didn’t and that’s just the way it is unfortunately. Here’s how I recovered…

Bobby from Marjinal plays ‘Negri Ngeri’ on electric ukulele

This is Bobby from the Indonesian band Marjinal playing ‘Negri Ngeri’ on my Risa Tenor stick. It is an Electric uke made to travel that I took with me to show Bob when I visited Jakarta earlier in the year, Bob was really good to me, we spent the whole day together, he showed me around, talked about the street kids and music and how different our relative places in the world are. Thanks Marjinal, you ROCK!

Kingcaster uke build : part 11 – How to paint an electric ukulele – Part 2

It’s going to get worse before it gets better…

I’m not sure that I have the patience to be an expert painter. I’m not sure that I have a gentle enough touch to be an expert painter. In my last post I talked about some of the challenges I’ve been having painting the body of my electric ukulele. I’d had a bit of a nightmare with the undercoat, but things seemed to be looking up. I closed off having applied the red finish and having left the body to hang for 24 hours. Have you been wondering what happened next? Read on…

Awol’s looking for a project

So I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure what my first ukulele project should be. There are lots in this site that I’d personally love to own, but you only get one first time. I am silly that way and think if you’re going to do some new adventure, a lot of thought should be put into it long before any materials are picked up. So far the bits that I do know that I’d like:

1st I’d like to practice without feeling self-conscious about others hearing me. The travel ukulele would fit the bill but I’d have to figure out some amplification solution, iPod or otherwise. For me that’s just more things to carry. The bass ukulele has the internal preamp I’d like. So I’m guessing I will go with that.

Next I have to figure out a body style. I’m old school and think a cool rocking look would be awesome. Ideas I’m considering:

So ya, I’ll have to narrow that bit down.

Next I’m considering if there is a preamp, couldn’t I have a speaker set in for when I want to show off what I’ve been practicing? Perhaps hidden by fabric, but the concern is that it could cause distortion if the pickup is sensitive to the vibration. Would like a bit of feedback regarding if this is possible.

Throw me your thoughts and I’ll start looking for the hardware that I know I’ll be using.

Scully’s iphone/ipad futulele canjolele ukulele

My mate scully is quite the genius when it comes to electronics and biscuit tins. Here is a video we just made of his brand new canjolelel / electrolele / futulele / iUkelele / tabulele / phoneulele / ukulele hero machine.

It is made with a Cadbury’s biscuit tin, a plank of wood, an iPad 3, an iPhone 4, and a bit of masking tape. Oh… and a funky bit of software called futulele which runs on both the ipad and iphone and connects them together to act like the neck and the body of the uke.

It is possible that this is the silliest future ukulele ever built! Hooray… watch out for when he has learnt a song or two more, only on ukeland.co.uk

Kingcaster uke build : part 10 – How to wire it up (properly)

Earlier this week I heeded Daniel Hulbert’s sage advice and decided to test out the wiring on my electric ukulele build. You will remember that I was being a right smart-arse refusing to test until I’d painted the body. Perhaps it was the paint fumes talking? What would you say if I was to tell you that having tested the bloody thing, that it wasn’t working? Yeah, I know… what are the odds of that!
